REVIEW OF DIOMERE'S EXILE BY SABRINA A. FISH

For February's book review, I read a fantasy romance titled DIOMERE'S EXILE (Gate Keeper Chronicles #1) by my friend and fellow author Sabrina A. Fish. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't read a lot of romance, unless it's LGBT+ focused, but I loved this story, and I love the imagination of the author who wrote it. But before I go into too much detail with my review, here's a bit about the book.

Summary:

Five Gates. Five Sisters. Five Very Different Men.

Once there were two worlds connected by five magical gates. Then the Gate Keepers closed the gates and disappeared. The Gate Keepers have returned. Nadia de Quinones was exiled when her nephew, the crown-prince was abducted on her watch. She’ll let nothing stand in the way of her redemption, not even discovering her heartbonded and a connection to an ancient magical gate.

Lord Gregor Cyrene is sworn to protect his country's royal heirs. After the youngest prince’s life is threatened, Gregor sets out to discover who is responsible and suspects the answer lies with Nadia. When fate forces their competing goals to align, neither are prepared for the irresistible attraction between them.

Can they see beyond their pasts and a millennia old hate between their people? Or will they continue to distrust, allowing those plotting against them to win?

***

I believe I was sitting in Sabrina's kitchen, having tea with her, when she first told me the idea she had for Diomere. At that point in time, the book--and the series it would become--looked entirely different than it does now. To be able to have that background and see the story's growth isn't something that all readers will experience when reading the book, but I can tout how great the book is and how much work truly goes into writing a novel from first idea to finished product because of that unique experience.

Likewise, Sabrina and I met in a writing workshop several years ago and have remained friends and writers since then. Just as stories evolve from first draft to final draft, so too do writer's skills. Sabrina has crafted a seamlessly written story that was an absolute joy to fall into.

I am in the middle of a PhD program, so a lot of my reading is highly technical and...dry. Diving headfirst into a fantasy world with princes and mermaids and incredible world-building quenched my thirst for escape into a new and amazing realm.

The romance between the main characters is absolutely palpable. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could have a tantrum wondering when the second Gate Keeper Chronicles book is going to come out. Nudge, nudge, Sabrina!

Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of the book is how tough the main character, Nadia, is. I also love what a well-rounded character she is. As a reader, you'll cheer her on, but you'll also question some of her decisions--both past and present, which is an element that I truly enjoyed. In my opinion, if the main character isn't believable and almost larger than life, then what's the point of reading a story about them?

I can't wait to read book #2, but in the meantime, I settled for leaving a five star review on my Goodreads
